The vision for the Dark Sky Discovery Center
The vision for the Dark Sky Discovery Center

The Fountain Hills Dark Sky Association is dedicated to educating the community about the advantages of smart lighting and protecting our unique dark sky. With your help, light pollution and light trespass can be minimized so that we and future generations can enjoy the wonders of the nighttime universe.

Fountain Hills stands apart from other communities for a number of reasons: its signature fountain, its geography and scenery, its small-town feel in the corner of a major metropolitan area, its adjacency to parks, preserves, and national forest, and its dark skies.

She has judged lighting competitions, been published extensively in magazines, newspapers, and books. Jan taught landscape lighting at UC Berkeley and Rutgers University in the Landscape Continuing Education departments during the 1980s and the 1990s. Jan studied plant identification, plant propagation and pathology, garden design and layout at UC Berkeley, Merritt College, and local Extension courses for years. Jan became interested in plants while in college at Michigan State University, while working in the greenhouses.
